The elasticity of the hoof horn depends on its moisture content: Excessive dessication of the horny box makes the horn hard and brittle. Such a loss of elasticity doesn’t only make it exceedingly difficult to care for the hoof and to perform potential hoof corrections but it also impairs the hoof mechanism. Excessive moisture in the hoof however can prevent the horn from providing its natural protective function as anti-bacterial barrier, resulting in a reduction of horn stability.
