Adhesive application on the hoof

Step by step to a proper adhesive application

Easy and with few tools, the farrier is able to perform all necessary working steps. For the user the patented process and the successful practical application ensure a professional care.

1. Cleaning the hoof wall

Please make sure that the horny wall is dry and void of grease. Along a width of 4 cm the horny wall needs to be cleaned with the smooth side of the rasp.

2. Template of the hoof

It is necessary that the hoof is properly dressed and that the metal inlay or horseshoe is shaped according the hoof contour. It’s easiest to get this done with the help of a template of the hoof. The wall of the shoe must, even without adhesive, fit tightly and snugly against the wall of the hoof. Both bearing edge and metal shoe must be plane because otherwise the metal inlays will act like springs and can then cause the adhesive to detach from the surface prematurely.

3. DALLMER Horseshoe Former

With the help of the DALLMER Horseshoe Former, horseshoes can easily be bent to the correct shape.

4. Heating up both hoofshoe and adhesive

Slowly heat the hoofshoe (hair dryer level 1) to a temperature of 38°C - 40°C. If pre-heated the hoofshoes are more pliable and will fit more easily.

Please note:

Providing you follow the instructions for use, the DALLMER Adhesive enables you to use it safely without any harm to the hoof.

5. Applying the adhesive

Spread the glue evenly on the inner wall of the hoof which is coated with a textile layer. This felt layer enables an even spreading of the glue and also represents a predetermined breaking point.

6. Fastening the strap on the hoof and readjusting the fit with a hammer

The DALLMER Hoofshoe is slipped onto the hoof and tightened with a strap. The use of wedges makes it easier for the hoof to slip into the shoe. A careful tip with a hammer and further tightening of the strap provide the desired fit. After about 10 minutes drying time, both strap and wedge are removed.
2 Hours after the adhesive application the horse can be deployed fully.

7. Removing the hoofshoes

To remove the DALLMER Hoofshoes: Heat the shoe wall intensely and carefully take off the shoe with a putty knife or carefully knock off the bottom of the DALLMER Cuff with atoeing knife.

Indications concerning the durability of an adhesive application

With our viscous 2-component adhesive DALLMER Hoofshoes stay on for 6 to 8 weeks because:

  • The glue fills even the narrowest of spaces.
  • The adhesive remains flexible after hardening.
  • The felt coating on the wall of the hoofshoe is an additional aid in providing optimum contact between the two adhesive surfaces and acts as a predetermined breaking point: In the event that a horse treads off a hoofshoe, the felt fibres tear without causing the hoof wall to break away.
  • Unproblematically, the hoof can be newly glued again after it got cleaned and degreased.

Please note: DALLMER Hoofshoes shouldn’t be left on the hoof for more than 6 to 8 weeks as decay could appear on the contact surfaces; especially if there is any lack of hygiene in the stable.

Foals should never wear hoofshoes for more than three weeks.
Because of their rapid growth cycle, it is appropriate to pause for about four days before applying a new foalshoe.
